The SUNY Plattsburgh Marksmanship Club is sponsored by the SUNY Plattsburgh Club Sports Department.The team competes and practices at the Plattsburgh Rod and Gun Club under the direction of Head Coach Tim Peters and advisor Peter Visconti. they shoot both 3-P Smallbore and 60 shots standing air rifle. They are part of the Eastern Collegiate Rifle Conferance against shoot against schools such as SUNY Maritime, RPI, Hillsdale College, Canisius, and John Jay. They also complete against independent schools . In addition to the Eastern Collegiate Rifle Conference they compete in the National Rifle League as part of the Northern Div in the Eastern Conference. The team shoots the ECRC matches both home and away. All National Rifle League matches are fired at home.The students also shoot as individuals in rifle matches held at the Plattsburgh Rod and Gun Club. All equipment is provided at no cost to the students. The team receives a yearly budget to cover expenses including travel from the school for away matches. Equipment is provided by the Plattsburgh Rod and Gun club and through a grant from the Friends of the NRA.
The Cardinals have enjoyed some great success over the past seven years, qualifiying for the MAC Championships nine years in a row, in both air rifle and smallbore, taking the championship in air rifle in 2018, 2019, 2020 and 2022 and in smallbore in 2019, 2022, 2023 and 2024. During the 2018-19 school year the team ended the season with a 7-2 record in smallbore tied for second overall in the MAC. They have also finished 2nd in the National Rifle League, Eastern Division three years in a row, and 3rd overall in the Eastern Conference in 2019. Several of its students have been named to the All Academic Team for the MAC Conference.
